Abstract
41-year-old woman was scheduled to receive the posterior lumbar interbody fusion. The elective surgery was performed smoothly under general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation. However, the patient complained of hoarseness in the postoperative period. A stroboscopic examination showed that the left vocal cord remained stationary, signifying left vocal cord paralysis. The patient discharged after two weeks and achieved complete recovery two month later.
Vocal cord paralysis is an uncommon complication of endotracheal intubation after induction of general anesthesia.
In this report, possible aetiological factors of vocal cord paralysis are discussed, including brief review of the relevant literature.
